Rockaway Valley is Divided Into Three Lines:

Morristown Chester Rockaway

We Provide a Wide Range of Services On Three Lines

The Rockaway Valley Carries a wide range of products and provides multiple services for our customers. Our Maine line runs from White House to Morristown, New Jersey with connecting branch lines to Gladstone and Chester. We also operate the former Delaware Lackawanna and Western main line known as the Rockaway Loop that runs from Denville by way of Rockaway to Dover and joint service with the Central Railroad of New Jersey on their Rockaway/Hibernia Branch.

The Rockaway Valley also runs joint service on the Central Railroad of New Jersey on their Chester Branch from Long Valley to Chester and the Erie Lackawanna Chester Branch from Chester to Lake Junction. Track rights on the Erie Lackawanna run from Lake Junction to Port Morris and Lake Junction to Dover. We have traffic interchanges points with the Central Railroad of New Jersey at White House, Lake Junction, and Rockaway Junction, and interchange with the Erie Lackawanna at Morristown and Port Morris. We also provide connecting service with the Morristown and Erie Railroad in Morristown and with the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway at Port Morris.





The Morristown Line

The Morristown Line is the original Rockaway Valley Railroad. The line starts White House where and small interchange yard with the CNJ and engine terminal is maintained. The railroad then heads in a northwesternly direction until it reaches Oldwick located at mile post 4. The line then runs due North to Pottersville, mile post 8, where the Rockaway Valley's customer, New Jersey Milling is located. The tracks then head northeast to Pea Pack(Gladstone) located at mile post 12.3. There is a short connecting line goes to the DLW Gladstone Branch. At mile 12.8 is Brook Side Junction and where the Chester Branch begins. There are 2 holding tracks, team track, fuel dealer and lumber company at this location. Pleasant Valley is located at 14.6 and the line turns due East to Ralston at mile marker 15.8 where the line starts to curve North again to Mendham mile 17.2. The line then runs North a brief distance to Brook Side 19.6 where it makes a sharp turn east to Washington Valley 22.2. Watnong, mile post 24, is a 4 track yard and the end of the original railroad. There is a coal and fuel dealer, lumber company, team track, and ware housing company. This yard is used as a staging and classification are for cars going to local customers and being interchanged with the DL&W and M&E railroads. The DL&W interchange is located at mile post 25.1 and the M&E interchange at 25.9.

The Chester Line

The Rockaway Valley Chester Branch begins at mile post 12.8 and called Brook Side Junction. There are 2 holding tracks, team track, fuel dealer and lumber company at this location. The line follows the PeaPack Brook to Chester, Mile Post 18.6. At this location the Chester Branch becomes part the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad and the mile post changes to 55.5 and counts down to the DL&W's Hoboken Terminal. The joint service between the Rockaway Valley and the DL&W begin here and switching work is between RV and DL&W trains. The railroad serves a grist mill/feed dealer and a Lumber/fuel dealer. The Line also connects the CNJ Chester and runs West to the CNJ's High Bridge Line in Long Valley. The DL&W track run North through Ironia (Randolph) 50.7 to Succasunna mile post 48.8. There is a large Westinghouse manufacturing plant, cement plant and a paper company at this location. The track continue North to McCainsville (Kenville) at mile 47.6 and cross the CNJ's High Bridge at Ferromonte Junction. The railroad serves a large quarry and two cement plants. The line then continues to Chester Junction, mile 41.4 and joins the DL&W main line running from Morristown and Hoboken to Port Morris and Scranton. It is at this location the joint service rights of the Rockaway Valley end and track rights take over allowing trains to get to Port Morris yard or Dover.

The Rockaway Line

The Rockaway line is know as the DL&W Rockaway Loop and is the original Morris and Essex Railroad main line to Dover before it became a part of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The line starts in Dover at East Dover Junction and runs Northeast into Rockaway. There are several customers and a small yard called Rockaway Junction that connects with the CNJ's Rockaway Branch just South of Rockaway. The CNJ Rockaway Branch then continues through downtown Rockaway into two industrial parks and the Rockaway Valley Shops. The main track of the Rockaway line turns Southeast at Rockaway Junction and heads towards Denville. At East Rockaway, a tail track comes from the Rockaway Valley Shops and rejoins the line. There are also two customers at this location and the tracks cross into Denville. The tracks then turn east serving a Fuel Dealer go to Denville Junction where they rejoin the DL&W's main line going East on the Boonton and Morristown Lines.
